Leave the city behind on a drive through Oahu's piko (navel) and its small farms and pineapple fields. Waialua Sugar Mill and Haleiwa Town's plantation architecture harken back to decades when sugar production reigned supreme. Shops, cafes and food trucks have replaced cane haul trains, and local outfitters lead horseback rides and shark cage dives. Further north, thunderous waves pound the shore in winter months, attracting surfers from around the world. Summer brings calm seas and swimming opportunities.
